Life Of The Party is Smart Pop with Heart, Hooks & Just Enough Glitter

Ehson Hashemian drops the angst and finds the groove

Ehson Hashemian

From co-writing a certified double platinum alt-rock anthem to crafting electro-pop bangers in his bedroom, Ehson Hashemian’s journey is anything but ordinary. You might recognize his name from the early days of The Jakes (who would later become Young the Giant), he co-wrote their breakout iconic hit “Cough Syrup.” Remember that one? Played on Glee, The Voice, even Fright Night? Yeah, that song.

But “Life Of The Party” isn’t some nostalgia trip. It’s a clear step into something shinier, glossier, and in its own way, braver. After years of experimenting in the alternative/indie rock space with his solo project Backwards Forwards, and more recently under his own name, Hashemian has decided to stop brooding in the corner and hit the dancefloor.

Ehson Hashemian - Life of the Party

With “Life Of The Party,” he makes a sharp pivot into shimmering synths and bounce-ready beats – an electropop gem built for late nights, glitter floors, and maybe a little emotional longing hidden beneath the strobe lights. Originally released in 2022, “Life Of The Party” is Hashemian at his most extroverted, both sonically and thematically. It’s sugar-rush pop in a sparkly suit.

Right from the first synth shimmer, “Life Of The Party” makes its intentions clear: this one’s built to bounce. It’s got the retro-futurist charm of Hot Chip, the disco-drenched thump of Daft Punk, and a wink of mainstream sugar a la Katy Perry (an admitted influence, along with Pharrell). The vocals are bright and direct – less indie haze, more pop sheen. Hashemian’s usual introspective alt-rock DNA still pulses underneath the synths. Hashemian even admits to stretching beyond his usual style to meet the song’s playful, infectious energy. And it pays off.

Lyrically, the track isn’t trying to overcomplicate things or trying to be deep, it’s trying to vibe. And honestly? That’s refreshing. It’s about that hope-filled anticipation of seeing someone you really want to be around. A little pleading, a lot of charm: “All you really gotta do is just pick up the phone” It’s a simple refrain, almost repetitive, but that’s kind of the point. Like any good dance floor anthem, the message is distilled down to its emotional essence: you walked in, the party started, and now there’s nowhere else we’d rather be.

Sonically, the track is slick but not soulless. The synths have a floaty, space-pop texture that gives it lift, while the groove remains grounded and steady. There’s no EDM bombast or overproduced gimmicks here – just a lean, confident arrangement that knows when to sparkle and when to let the beat breathe. It’s catchy without trying too hard, and that’s rare in a world of algorithm-chasing pop drops.

But here’s where we get a little critical because that’s what we do.

There is a sense of safety here. It’s polished, poised, and undeniably fun, but it doesn’t quite take the risks that some of his deeper cuts do. Some may argue it doesn’t fully lean into the quirk or edge that Hashemian’s earlier material had in spades. For someone with his songwriting pedigree, we’re left wondering: what happens when he blends this new pop sensibility with the lyrical depth and left-field choices of his alt-rock roots? That’s a cocktail we’d love to sip on.

In that context, his brand new album Believe delivers as it’s more dimensional. If “Life Of The Party” is the invitation, Believe is the afterparty – and it’s got way more rooms to explore. What ties it all together is Hashemian’s knack for balancing polish with emotion. Even when he’s stepping out of his comfort zone, his songwriting instincts remain razor sharp – like an indie pop palette cleanser from an artist better known for introspection.

All said, “Life Of The Party” is a welcome surprise from an artist unafraid to reinvent himself. It’s the sound of someone letting go and inviting us to do the same. A solid reminder that Hashemian is an artist in motion – genre fluid, creatively restless, and clearly having fun while making music on his own terms. For fans of smart pop with a heart (and a beat), this one’s definitely well worth your attention.

Ehson Hashemian – Life Of The Party – Song Lyrics

Life of the party
Life of the party
Life of the party
Life of the party

I was really hoping that you’d turn up
I was really hoping that we’d have fun
Would you really rather just be staying home alone?
Would you really rather just be staying home alone?
All you really gotta do is just pick up the phone
All you really gotta do is just pick up the phone
I wouldn’t have anyone else to dance with without you
I wouldn’t have anyone else to dance with without you

Life of the party
Just started when you walked in
Life of the party
There’s no one else that I need
Life of the party
Just started when you walked in
Life of the party
There’s no one else that I need

I was hoping that I’d see you tonight
I was hoping that we’d turn out alright
Would you really rather just be staying home alone?
Would you really rather just be staying home alone?
All you really gotta do is just pick up the phone
All you really gotta do is just pick up the phone
I wouldn’t have anyone else to dance with without you
I wouldn’t have anyone else to dance with without you

Life of the party
Just started when you walked in
Life of the party
There’s no one else that I need
Life of the party
Just started when you walked in
Life of the party
There’s no one else that I need
Life of the party
Just started when you walked in
Life of the party
There’s no one else that I need

Life of the party
Life of the party

Life of the party
Just started when you walked in
Life of the party
There’s no one else that I need
Life of the party
Just started when you walked in
Life of the party
There’s no one else that I need
